Áine Byrne

Principal Investigator

I joined the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in 2019. Before joining UCD, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Neural Sciences, New York University. I obtained my PhD in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham in 2017.

Indranil Ghosh

Postdoctoral Fellow

My background is in Physics and Applied Mathematics. I am interested in nonlinear dynamics, computational neuroscience, and other related topics. Before joining the School of Mathematics and Statistics as a postdoctoral fellow, I was a postdoc in applied mathematics at Massey University in New Zealand. I also received my Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Massey University in New Zealand. I currently work in mathematical modelling of gap junctions in neurons.

PhD Student

I started my PhD in UCD in 2022 after completing my undergraduate in applied mathematics from Maynooth University. I am now in my fourth year. Currently, I am trying to include realistic synaptic dynamics into neuronal models with a potential link to epilepsy in the future. Before this, I performed a parameter analysis of a next generation neural mass model and linked its simulated activity to Parkinsonian-like beta-band activity.

Niamh Fennelly

PhD Student

I completed my BSc in Applied and Computational Mathematics at University College Dublin in 2023 and am now a third-year PhD student in Mathematical Sciences at UCD, funded by the Research Ireland Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science.

I specialise in mathematical neuroscience with a focus on synaptic plasticity and low-dimensional models of neural networks. Specifically, I implement and analyse biophysically inspired plasticity rules within the next-generation neural mass framework. I am currently extending this to next-generation neural field models to investigate plasticity-driven spatial patterning and spatiotemporal dynamics. My research interests include mean-field theory, bifurcation analysis, multistability and chaos.
